Since 2022, I’ve been creating testimonial content for my clients, and every single time, I’m amazed at what their customers have to say. Naturally, they share the positive experiences you’d expect, and sometimes a few suggestions for improvement. But what happens almost every time is something far more powerful: customers reveal unexpected benefits of a product or service that my clients didn’t even know existed.
Here are just a few real examples:
“My team is less stressed now that we automated our AR.”
“We don’t have to keep our people late, missing family activities, because our efficiency and ability to scale has improved.”
“I don’t spend nearly as much time recruiting great candidates because our recruiter knows us so well and cares about our team. It’s a huge relief.”
When I share these kinds of insights back with my clients, they’re often surprised—and thrilled. They gain new value propositions they didn’t even know they were delivering. And that’s where the magic happens. When you’re marketing or selling, these hidden benefits resonate deeply with your target audience because they touch on real-world problems and outcomes.
Your Customers Hold the Marketing Gold
There’s a saying I love to use: “Your customers hold the marketing gold.”
What does that mean? It means your customers are the key to uncovering your most valuable messaging. They’re the ones living the experience of using your product or service day in and day out. They know exactly how it impacts their lives, their teams, and their businesses. Often, they’ll articulate the value in ways you never could.
That “gold” isn’t found in boardroom brainstorming sessions or by guessing what your audience wants—it’s discovered when you listen to the voices of the people you serve. Their words, their stories, and their experiences become the most compelling assets in your content marketing strategy.
Why Testimonials Are So Powerful in Content Marketing
Testimonials are more than “nice-to-haves” on your website or social media feed. They’re one of the most powerful forms of content you can create, for a few key reasons:
Authenticity builds trust. Today’s buyers are skeptical of polished marketing messages. Hearing directly from real customers cuts through the noise.
Customers surface unique value. As shown in the examples above, customers often highlight benefits you might not even realize you provide—insights you can’t get anywhere else.
Social proof drives decisions. People are more likely to take action when they see others like them achieving results with your product or service.
Testimonials fuel multi-channel content. They can be repurposed into case studies, videos, social posts, email campaigns, and sales collateral—extending their impact across your marketing strategy.
How to Unlock the Best Testimonials
Don’t be afraid to spend time talking to your customers. Ask them about their experiences, what’s working, and where you could improve. You’ll be surprised by the honesty and richness of their feedback.
Even better, consider working with a third party who can ask those questions for you. Customers often feel more comfortable opening up in that environment, which leads to more genuine and actionable insights.
At the end of the day, testimonial content isn’t just about showcasing happy customers—it’s about discovering the deeper, often hidden value your business brings to people’s lives. And once you uncover that, you’ll have a much stronger story to tell your audience. Because remember: your customers hold the marketing gold—don’t let it go untapped.
